I got into the punk scene around 83 because there were a lot of surf and skate punks on my street and we all grew up together. Everybody was bored and frustrated, and a lot of people's parents were divorced or headed in that direction (mine were). Everyone was starting punk bands in their garage, going to shows, and the OC was like Mecca to us. I remember the Nazi skinheads were a real problem in San Diego county. They would spray paint swastikas on everything and start fights with anyone, punk or not. The bad thing for punks was that society associated us with the skinheads, and we had nothing to do with the white power thing. One advantage I had was that all the guys and their older brothers looked out for me and their sisters and other girls that hung out with us, we all hung out in big groups, so I was always protected in a way. But that still didn't prevent me from getting in alot of fights though. I still have a knot of scar tissue on my scalp from getting kicked in the head with a steel-toe boot.

The blue hair is long gone and I look pretty normal now (I look like friggin Sandra Dee, actually), but that time definitely influenced me and shaped me on the inside, no matter how I look on the outside.

Yeah the early 80's in Orange County was just a huge explosion of great music. Bands playing decent music all over the place, clubs, backyard parties, etc. I too got into my share of drunken brawls, but don't regret one minute of it. In my teens I was always in the pit, just having a blast, now at 41 I find myself just watching nowadays. My husband is not a Social D fan, most of my girlfriends listen to freaking pop, and if it wasn't for my teenage son or brother in law accompanying me to shows, I'd be miserable. Splurged on tickets on Ebay for the Pomona show Sunday night, couldn't wait for them to play more local.

Well have fun on Sunday, and Babyblue71 have fun on Friday and Saturday. I enjoyed your stories. I've told my stories on here before, but I'm not really up for a personal rehash. In a nutshell, I'm 32, and I have a 9 year old son. I got into punk rock in my early teens in the mid eighties. I lived in a small town in the desert, and it was a rough existence. Its all good now, I wouldnt take it back for anything.
One more thing that I think is interesting about OC Punkers that old school friends have mentioned about those days.....they might have fought the jocks, construction workers, cops, etc. But they also fought each other by rival cities. It was definately a violent time, lots of anger.

Yeah, there was definately a lot of hate and anger then, but the music at the time seemed to help deal with it all, which I think is why I still love it. Nothing since has really had the effect the music did at that time. i could be feeling a certain way and hear a song and say yeah, that's exactly how I'm feeling. Along with Social D, my friend and I saw and listened to alot of Suicidal Tendencies as well. The bands just seemed to be able to convey what we were going through. And now that we've made it through, to still hear some of those going strong is just unbelieveable.

Yes, HB is way different now. Main street too. Golden Bear was a favorite hangout. People used to live above the stores on Main St and would have parties and just hang out the windows. The pier was a scary place to be at night as the homeless lived under it. Main St is still a teen hangout, but the cops are everywhere, there's a curfew of 10pm, and they give tickets for everything thay can, like no bike license, it's crazy. There still is a 4th of July parade every year that is fun and this past summer for the 1st time they had a fireworks show at the beach. I lived on 11th street, 3 blocks from the beach in the early 80's. My rommoate and I would skateboard to Taco Bell, cruise Main Street and just party. Now a lot of the charm is gone, it now looks like the newer south Orange County Communities, all beige stucco. Even the older houses with the big porches that had personality are being bought and are tearing them down to build more modern looking cookie cutter houses. The high school though looks the same, in fact next year is it's 100th anniversary and still has it's old school charm.

Erica S, you're a southern Californian, aren't ya? How come you're not going to the Pomona show? Tickets still available on Ebay, at decent prices.

That old high school has some absolutely gorgeous architecture. Do you ever see the calendars that the Realtors pass out of HB in the early 1900's? I love that stuff...

I'm not going to the Glass House, because I dont like that venue, and I heard Soma was worse.
I was planning on going up Thursday evening for Viva Las Vegas, so I decided going up one day earlier to see Social D up there would be my best bet. Its a great time seeing them at the Hard Rock. I saw them there about 7 years ago.

I've never been to Soma or The Glass House, but it's been too long since I've seen them, so I'm going for it. Originally I wasn't going to go, I thought Pomona was too far, but my son had a baseball game out there last weekend and it was a 30 minute drive, which isn't too far, so I went on Ebay and bought 2. Going with my brother in law who is a big fan as well. Had tickets for the Vegas show in Feb, but couldn't find anyone to go with me. I was so bummed, thought Vegas was the ultimate place to see them, drinking, gambling, Social D what a great combo!
